Creating a Positive Working Environment: A Well-Being Perspective

In the ever-evolving landscape of the British creative industries, we have a profound duty to prioritise the well-being of not just our cast, but our crew as well.

As the adage goes, “What comes first, the chicken or the egg?”—in our industry, both are equally vital to the success of a production. Recognising that we are all talent is essential; one cannot thrive without the other.

In a post-COVID world, awareness of our own mortality has heightened, prompting a critical reflection on the environments we create for ourselves at work. The tragedies that have befallen members of our industry have underscored the urgent need for change, particularly among those in positions of power. This shift towards prioritising well-being is not just a trend; it’s a necessary evolution in how we operate.

Throughout my experience as a well-being facilitator in 2024, I’ve observed a growing demand for roles focused on well-being and accessibility, signalling a cultural shift towards team health. Working across both scripted and unscripted genres, I’ve found that the reception to these initiatives has been overwhelmingly positive. However, as with any new role, actions speak louder than words. Earning the trust of my colleagues required commitment and consistency.

Being a well-being facilitator means being present and approachable, ready to support and guide when challenges arise. It’s about demonstrating a proactive approach to resolving issues, using initiative, and serving as a confidential third party who can influence production dynamics positively. Relationship building has been key in this role, whether through one-on-one conversations or group interactions. Open lines of communication foster a culture where everyone feels valued and heard, which is a cornerstone of a positive working environment.

Creating a workplace that works for us rather than against us involves a collective effort. By prioritizing well-being, we not only enhance individual experiences but also elevate the overall quality of our productions. It’s time we embrace this change wholeheartedly, ensuring that every member of our team feels supported, respected, and empowered to thrive. Together, we can cultivate a creative industry that champions well-being at its core, ultimately leading to richer, more impactful storytelling.
